Professional, Evidence-Based Psychotherapy & Counselling Services in Brighton and Online

During our times of distress and struggle, we don’t need finding support to be an additional complication; but sadly this sometimes the case in todays world. With the health care system and the different therapies on offer, often we can begin feeling like we are in a maze and it can be hard to know where to start or what is most suitable for what we need.

I aim to take a transparent and simple approach about how we might work together and what you can expect from a therapy relationship with me, with as little therapy jargon as possible. You know yourself best, and I would like to work collaboratively with you. From a spectrum of training I work integratively from evidence-based approaches such as CBT (Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy), used by the National Health Service, as well as humanistically; most importantly, treating you as a human individual, with kindness and compassion from my own place of humanity, and adapting what we do to what will work for you.

Please see Counselling and Psychological Therapy if you have a specific issue, and would like to know more about whether this approach could be a fit for you; Psychotherapy if you would like to know about a more exploratory way of working or Mindfulness – Based Interventions if you are interested in finding out more about this approach. I also offer Relationship Counselling to couples an groups in my independent practice.

I am willing to work with a number of Health Insurers and am currently registered with BUPA. If you think you may be covered for therapy by your health insurance and would like to know more, please feel free to make an enquiry.

Before every session, I take a moment to remember my humanity. There is no experience that this man has that I cannot share with him, no fear that I cannot understand, no suffering that I cannot care about, because I too am human.

No matter how deep his wound, he does not need to be ashamed in front of me. I too am vulnerable. And because of this, I am enough. Whatever his story, he no longer needs to be alone with it. This is what will allow his healing to begin.

Testimonials

“Foremost I think it’s key to mention what ‘areas’ I brought with me when I first started talking to Hilary. These included: – Immense personal trauma – PTSD symptoms – History of eating disorders (anorexia and bulimia) – Experiences of depress and suicidal thoughts – Being cancelled and life altering experiences. I have had 9 sessions with Hilary now which is something I did not think I would fully commit to. I had held off starting therapy for so long, party due to not trusting the process and partly down to not trusting people to have a positive impact, or any impact at all. I am immensely glad to say I was wrong. Having come to Hilary for one specific topic of trauma in my life, I genuinely feel I had a friend support me through its impact, help me find answers to questions I had been left alone to ask and more than anything, someone who truly wanted to help me find means to change my world view and state of mind for the better. With 9 sessions in I hope to work with Hilary for the foreseeable future, genuinely looking forward to our conversations each week and have truly felt my life improve off the back of my time working with her. I know therapy can seem a big jump, but I can say that Hilary has shown immense compassion, empathy and patience helping me start, introduce and be part of this process. I hope if you read this, you take a chance and from first hand experience can say you are in immensely knowledgeable, but most importantly, kind hands.”

“Therapy with Hilary has been fantastic so far. I truly appreciate her adaptable and flexible approach to my needs and our sessions. From our very first session and every session since, Hilary has worked collaboratively with me throughout. She really focuses on creating a therapeutic space tailored to you but also is mindful that, at times, your needs may change. Therefore she welcomes making adaptations to reflect these times. She proactively invites feedback and acts on it too. With Hilary, you can really build your experience for you while being empowered and supported throughout the process. Additionally, Hilary has really helped my to delve in and figure out my brain, understand it better from a perspective of curiosity. We have explored areas of neurodiversity and beauty in my mind, as well as better understand the challenges some of these deficits can cause. Then workshop ideas and methods to help these deficits. I am a mental health professional myself and really value how Hilary meets me at my level (or whatever level I am at for that day!). As well as mutual sharing of some related elements of our professions. This I find to be incredibly validating, insightful and helpful. And lastly (for now), I want to thank Hilary for being so compassionate, adaptable and open with me since day one. You can really feel how much passion, skill and dedication Hilary has for her practice.
